ROYAL CANADIAN NAVY

I went through my Basic in Cornwallis in 1977 before taking my TQ1 course in Esquimalt (CW, Manual typewriters and Mod 28 Teletype!).

Sailed on Iroquois (CZGD), Athabaskan (CYWM) and two tours on Preserver (CGRG) as well as a shore posting to CFS Mill Cove (CFH). I was on the first Naval Electronic Technician (NET) course and finished up as an NET (Comms) prior to joining the Coast Guard in 1988.

CANADIAN COAST GUARD

Served as an RO at CGRS Sault Ste. Marie (VBB) before becoming the Telecom Operations Manager (TOM) at that station. In 1996 the CG Radio combined with Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) to become Marine Communications and Traffic Services and I went on to Officer-in-Charge (OIC) positions at MCTS Prescott (VBR), MCTS Iqaluit (VFF) and finally back to MCTS Halifax (VCS).

I left the RO classification in 2011 when I became the Superintendent of MCTS Maritimes Region and then MCTS Atlantic (after the consolidation of Maritimes and Newfoundland Regions).

I moved on from the Radio/Comms field in 2016 but still serving in CCG as the Senior Advisor to the Assistant Commissioner.

I’ll have 46 years in this October so will be looking at retirement one of these days!
