Donald Norman McNiven

April 6, 1939 - February 18, 2015

 

It is with great sadness that the family of Donald McNiven announces his sudden passing, which occurred in Saint John on February 18, 2015. Born in Saint John on April 6th, 1939, he was a son of the late James Mitchell McNiven and Ida Lillian (Pratt) McNiven.

 

He graduated from the Saint John Vocational School’s Electrical Program in 1957, graduated from the Department of Transport’s Radio School in 1958, and the Saint John Vocational School’s Telecommunication Program in 1959.

 

Donald worked as a Radio Operator on the icebreaker “Baffin” from 1960-1961, and then started work at the Saint John Airport in 1961 as a Flight Service Specialist for Transport Canada, retiring in 1994.

 

He had a love of trains all his life, and was a member of the Saint John Society of Model Railroad Engineers. Donald loved his family pets, and was an adherent of Edith Avenue United Baptist Church, a member of the Senior Choir, and was a volunteer with Fundy Cable.

 

Donald is survived by his wife, Barbara Jean (Dow), sister Janice (Wayne MacKay), his children; Dr. Dawn (Dr. Paul Kerr), James, John (Monique St. Pierre), Carolyn (David Lint), Peter (Kelly McLellan), and Lori (Garfield McPhee), grandchildren Matthew McNiven (Katie McLellan), Siobhan, Laura, David, Molly and Maggie Kerr; William and Matthew Lint, Khrystyne and Marley McNiven, as well as many nieces and nephews, and close friend, Dwayne Porter.In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sisters Joan Muir, Lois Pratt, brothers James and Eldon McNiven, and his daughter, Margaret-Anne McNiven.

 

Resting at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John (646-2424), with visitation on Wednesday, May 6th from 12-2 pm, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 pm, from the Fundy Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will take place in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the Saint John SPCA, or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
