 CROWELL,
Arthur Freeman – 81, of Yarmouth, passed away on January 22, 2014.
It is with a loving heart that we announce the passing
of Arthur Freeman Crowell. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by loved
ones. Art was born in Yarmouth in 1932, son of Arthur Senior and Beatrice
Kilcup Crowell. His early education was at the Central Chebogue and
Rockville Schools.
Following graduation from high school,
he went on to study in Saint John, NB, where he earned a certificate as a
Radio Operator. His first job was on a ship carrying coal from Cape Breton
to Brazil.
He returned to Yarmouth and joined the
Department of Transport as Radio Operator in 1951, retiring thirty-six years
later. His first position was at the Rockville Marine Station. One early
duty in this position was 16 months at Cape Hopes Advance Direct and Finding
Station, a remote station in the Quebec Arctic. Upon his return, every three
months he did a tour of duty on the Lurcher Lightship. The last 10 years of
his work life was spent at the Yarmouth airport when the “air” and “sea”
stations were combined.
He married the love of his life, Alberta Kathleen
(Kay) Smith in 1951. They celebrated their 62nd anniversary this past
December. Art’s spirit will be carried on by Kay, their three children;
Scott, New Minas (Donna Amon); Debra Crowell, Kentville and Sharon Crowell,
Kentville. Art dearly loved spending his retirement days with his seven
grandchildren; Matthew Morse, George Parkes, Peter Morse, Pamela Crowell,
Kate Parkes, Alexander Crowell, and Samantha Crowell. They will sorely miss
their Grampie. Art was proud to also have three great-granddaughters. Arthur
will also be greatly missed by two sisters, Lois Hunter, Yarmouth and Anne
MacMullen, London, Ontario as well as a brother Harold (Mary) Crowell, Saint
John, NB.
Art was an avid ham radio operator since childhood and
looked forward to going to the ‘coffee klatch’ every Saturday with his ham
buddies. He had many hobbies and activities including growing his tomatoes,
tinkering with his aerials, his stereo, computers, volunteering at the
Yarmouth Food Bank, Time-Out for Seniors at Zion Baptist Church, and TOPS.
Very special thanks to the excellent care provided by
the VON nurses and other home care providers which allowed Art to remain at
home.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the VON,
the Yarmouth Food Bank, or a charity of your choice. We encourage anyone
with pictures and/or a special memory of Art to e-mail them to

condolences may be sent to the family at sweenysfh@eastlink.ca.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s
Funeral Home and Crematorium. Cremation has taken place and there will be no
visitation as per family request. A celebration of Art’s life will be held
on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 2:00 pm from Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel
with Rev. Ray Corbett officiating. Interment will be at a later date.
